英語で味う新古今和歌集(序) Enjoying Shinkokin Wakashu in English – Introduction

「令和」の時代になりました。令和は万葉集からとられたとのことです。日本語の素晴らしさを味わうと共に、その素晴らしさを英語に表現してみたいと思いました。万葉集、古今和歌集、新古今和歌集をぱらぱらと目を通すなか、なぜか新古今和歌集の雑歌に魅せられ数首を英訳しました。特に菅原道真の作品のすばらしさ、その現代的感性に心を奪われました。

シェイクスピア形式ソネットとは
ソネットというのは、14行の弱強5歩格(アイアンビックペンタミター; iambic pentameter)からなる押韻詩(rhymed verse)です。ダンテがVita Nuova(新生)に用い、のちにルネッサンス時代にイタリアからヨーロッパに普及し、フランスを経てイギリスに伝わった詩形です。古くは18行からなる恋歌でしたが、17世紀頃から14行詩に制限されるようになりました。
イタリアの14行詩とは異なる押韻法がイギリスにでてきました。イギリスのソネットはその押韻の形式にイタリア式とイギリス式が出現しました。後者はシェイクスピア形式とも呼ばれます。（「英詩概論」斎藤勇著、研究社、1957、iambic pentameter-Wikipedia）
