株の次に、商品で儲けたケインズ
ケインズが、生涯で一番儲けたのは証券投資である。それは生涯投資所得の約86%に及ぶ。 次に設けたのがコモディティ投資であり、それは生涯投資所得の約9%になる。
特に、1936年は好調でコモディティーで、生涯最高の3万6000ポンド稼いでいる(所得ベース)。37年は8000ポンド程の損失だ。
商品相場(ラード)の読みの一端
ケインズは、前述の手紙の約4か月後の10月26日、再びR.F.カーンに次の書簡を送っている。ケインズのラード(豚油)、ホッグ、ライトホッグ(豚)の需給、相場の読みの一端をうかがうことができる。
R.F.カーンへの手紙(1937年10月26日)
前年1936年10月に予想したことが今起きています。但し、供給不足は、ラードが他の豚製品に比べて割安なので、その生産を可能な限り抑えているためです。生産は、通常よりかなり低いレベルです。一方、他の代替品に比べてあまり高くないため、ラードへの生産の代替も進んでいません。一方、消費量は、全く通常通りなので、生産の2倍です。
もし、ピエロ・スラッファが豚を見たら、生きている動物は、寒い倉庫で食料が安くなるのを待てないことを知るでしょう。8カ月で市場に出され、今市場に出ている豚は、安いトウモロコシが出るまで待たされるということは無いわけです。一方で、6カ月で9月に市場に出されるライトホッグ(豚)は、さらに2カ月待たされるというのは、ありそうなことです。しかし、ライトホッグの価格は、ラード(豚油)の価格とは異なり、とても満足できるものなので、そういったことをする必要は生じていないわけです。
一方で、ピエロが言うように、とても若い豚の場合には、5月までにより大量に供給されるというのはあり得ることです。但し、市場はそのようには見ていないようです。5月のラードは、通常予想されるよい、著しいバックワーディションになっているからです。

＊わたしの消費についての推定は、高すぎるかもしれません。豚の屠殺は20%減っただけですが、豚当りのラードは25%減りました。このため、ラード生産は40%減りました。一方で、消費と輸出は増加しています。

My view is that what was predicted in October 1936 is now happening, though the shortage of supply has been accentuated by the fact that lard is so cheap relatively to other pig product that as little as possible of the animal is being converted into that for, so that the present out of lard from a given hog is much below normal. At the same time the price relatively to substitutes is not high enough to lead to much substitution Consumption now appears to be running at a fully normal figure, and is about twice production.
If Piero [Sraffa] had ever seen a pig, he would know that live animal cannot be kept in cold storage waiting till its food stuffs are cheaper. It is marketed at about 8 months old, and none of the pigs now coming into the market could have been held over to be finished on cheaper maize. All that could happen is that the light hogs, which would otherwise have been marketed at the end of September, at 6 months, might be kept on for another 2 months. But the price of light hogs is very satisfactory, as distinct from the price of lard, so that there is no great motive to do this.
On the other hand, I should have thought that Piero’s argument would be plausible in the case of pigs which are now very young, so that there would be a more abundant supply by next May. Yet the market does not seem to take this view, May lard being at a contango instead of at a material backwardation, as one would have expected.

* My estimates on consumption looks too high to be possible. Hog slaughter has only fallen 20 per cent, but lard per hog has fallen 25 per cent, so that lard output has fallen 40 per cent, whilst consumption and exports has increased.
