木綿(ﾕﾌ)たたみ　手に取り持ちて　かくだにも　我(ｱﾚ)は祈(ｺ)ひなむ　君に逢(ｱ)はぬかも

I am anxious that I may not able to see him eventually,
Even though I am praying and longing for him, by weaving and holding Yu in my hand strenuously.

反歌

木綿(ﾕﾌ)たたみ　手に取り持ちて　かくだにも　我(ｱﾚ)は祈(ｺ)ひなむ　君に逢(ｱ)はぬかも

大伴坂上郎女 (ｵﾎﾄﾓﾉｻｶﾉｳﾍﾉｲﾗﾂﾒ)

右の歌は、天平五年の冬十一月を以ちて、大伴の氏の神に供へ祭る時にいささかこの歌を作れり。故に神を祭る歌といふ。

(現代語訳)
木綿(ﾕｳ)を畳(ﾀﾀ)んで、手に取り持って、これほどまでもわたしはお祈り(恋)しているのに、あの方に逢えないのではないだろうか。

右の歌は天平五年十一月に、大伴氏の氏神に供え祭る時に、この歌を作ってみた。そこで神祭りの歌という。

An envoy

I am anxious that I may not able to see him eventually,
Even though I am praying and longing for him, by weaving and holding Yu in my hand strenuously.

The poem was produced to be offered to Otomo family’s guardian deity. Hence, It’s called divine festival song.

Otomo No Sakanoue No Iratsume
